Abstract

The Bioethics and Safety Act have adopted the ¡°14-day rule¡± which refers to the basic research principle to limit human embryo research before appearing primitive streak since 2004. However, current broader scientific achievements regarding human genome editing research have re-emerged active discussion for the ¡°14-day rule.¡± In particular, research on self-organization of human embryo in vitro, genome editing research regarding the animal or chimeric embryo, human organoid research and human organoid research shows evidences that justifies to extend the ¡°14-day rule.¡± This article explores recent ethical and legal issues between scientific application on genome editing technology and the ¡°14-day rule¡± and suggests possible considerations to discuss the revision of the ¡°14-day rule¡± in the Bioethics and Safety Act for further studies.
